Softer, bouncier, more stable and durable—the redesigned Torrent 4 is all about that cushion, and honed for the trail. Hoka upgraded the midsole compound for a lighter, cushier ride, increasing the stack height but nestling the foot securely in an Active Foot Frame™. Then they reworked the 5mm lugs for an even more aggressive bite, wrapping the high-abrasion rubber strategically up the outsole, and adding an extra plush sockliner for comfort for the long haul.

I like these shoes a lot but I don't love them

Pro: First run out the box was 10 miles with no issues. The feel was very similar to Torrent 3, which I love. I like that I can go from a trail directly to the street without missing a beat and the shoes do not have the added weight you would assume a trail shoe would. Cons: The upper mesh material,...

Completely different shoe from original Torrent

The beauty of the Torrent has been the simple design, lower stack height and lightweight feel with some cushion. It's tough finding all of that in a mid-drop shop. It's been my go-to workhorse for years from training to long distances. The torrent 2 was the best, the 3 was okay with some durability ...

I was worried that the Torrent 4 would feel clunkier than the Torrent 3. It feels basically the same, but maybe a bit more cushioning. Loving it!

Changed design / Run Big

Sadlyy this latest update to the design makes the shoes not fit as well as the provious models. I loved my Torrent 2 and Torrent 3's and theese run big and the extra design feature on the top of the shoe where your foot bends is not comfortable. My foot is between 6 and 6.5 ( closer to 6.5) . In the previous model I wore a 6.5. I had to return them. Please go back to the model 3 design !

I'm writing this review because I bought my hokas back in August of 2024. I wore them for work and by November 2024 the sole of my right shoe was falling off of the shoe. I talked to customer service and they agreed that it sounded like a defect in the shoe. I sent them back two separate times after they agreed to have them evaluated because of this defect on the bottom of the shoe. I received a letter stating they could not refund me anything due to the warranty being expired. I've bought way cheaper shoes that I have had for years and never fell apart as fast as my $100+ hokas have. I will not be buying from Hoka ever again because of this issue they did not fix. Do not buy these shoes because they will not give you a refund on their defaulted products.

Official Response by HOKA ONE ONE

When sending in your pair to be evaluated, we recommend including proof of purchase to ensure a streamlined evaluation. Our warranty is available for one-year after purchase as most defects will present themselves within the first year of wear. If you have further questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to our customer care team through our help center bit.ly/HOKAHelps.

Completely different shoe from original Torrent

The beauty of the Torrent has been the simple design, lower stack height and lightweight feel with some cushion. It's tough finding all of that in a mid-drop shop. It's been my go-to workhorse for years from training to long distances. The torrent 2 was the best, the 3 was okay with some durability issues and now they've just designed a completely different shoe. The rocker feels weird if you're not a heel striker, and with the increased stack height you're better off just getting the speedgoat or mafete. This feels clunky and the stack height is awful for trail feel and rolling ankles in technical terrain. This new version shouldn't be called Torrent, they've just created an entirely different shoe and now there's no shoe in hoka's line-up that replaces the classic Torrent.

Official Response by HOKA ONE ONE

We know it can be a disappointment to have a favorite shoe undergo unfavorable changes. If you aren't fond of the Torrent 4 and you are looking for a style with a lower stack height, you may be inclined to check out our Zinal 2 model. You can look over the specs using our shoe finder tool here: bit.ly/HOKAShoeFinder. Keep in mind that you are under no obligation to your purchase within the first 30 days, so we suggest you try them out for yourself. You can find out more about our guarantee here: bit.ly/HOKA30Day.

I like that I can go from a trail directly to the street without missing a beat and the shoes do not have the added weight you would assume a trail shoe would. Cons: The upper mesh material, that seems very similar to Clifton, is not trail friendly. Dirt sticks and does not want to be wiped off and any items that are kicked up on the run is felt, especially on top of the foot. The materials on the Torrent 3 seem to handle the battles of trail running better. I also wish there were more colors to choose from.

I've tried a lot of different running/walking shoes. Hoka has been the best for me. I don't even need to wear my insoles. They cost a bit more but last so much longer. I think a better investment in the long run.
