Sports Basement's Refillable Propane Canisters!

Over 40 million disposable propane canisters are purchased, used, and discarded in the US every year. Even when they
are recycled (a process which is incredibly expensive and difficult) it can be dangerous for sanitation workers if there's any gas left in the containers, which is incredibly common. On the contrary, refillable propane canisters are much more earth-friendly, much safer and much cheaper!

We love the Earth and we love our customers, which is why we sell refillable propane canisters and refill them for free.

How we’ve helped the planet since we started the exchange program (and we’re only gettin’ started):

  • 140,000 canisters kept out of landfills
  • over $850,000 saved by our customers
  • 95,000 FREE refills
  •

Plus, we provide free propane refills to all Basementeers ($2 per fill up for non-Basementeers). Just bring in the empty refillable propane canister you purchased with us, and we'll give you a full one, no waiting necessary - at any of our 12 locations. It's that easy to say no to landfills and say yes to our planet!

The canister fits the same connections as a standard 16oz one, and is certified for 12 years. Free propane refills are for recreational use only.

Told camping friends about this a few months ago, and one of them ended up camping with us up in the Sierras a few weeks ago, and he brought along his new refillable propane canister from SB. It started a convo at camp about how, when he went in search of an SB location for the canister, he hand’t realized that he was just half a mile from the Sunnyvale location, and he went in for the first time, and then over the next weeks ended up getting his bike fixed there and getting some gear, and then our camping group went on a lovefest about why SB is the best, that it feels like the local store that a certain competitor no longer feels like. Thanks SB, you guys rock!

I’m just back from our annual camping trip. An additional 2 families have adopted your propane solution since last year. I expect at least 2 more converts. Keep up the excellent work.

This is a great bargain and great for the environment. I’ve used the Coleman throw-away canisters for 35 years, now finally an alternative. Kudos to SB, this is why I shop there. The “other” big box outdoor store should take notice.

This is wonderful. I tried one and it works with my car camping stove. I’ll be by for a couple of more tanks.

Some companies make adapters to go from propane to butane connectors. Remember propane (heavier than air) is an outdoor/good ventilation area fuel.

Jay: Sadly there are no Jetboil-style refillable propane canisters as of yet (that we’ve found, at least). Rest assured it’s on our list!
Susan: The canisters we’re offering are a specific variety that are unique in that they are able to be refilled (most aren’t). So, we can’t refill your existing propane canisters. Take a look at the product page for more info!
