Description
Accidents happen. People get hurt, sick, or lost. The temperature drops, the wind picks up, and it starts to rain. Would you know what to do? Many backcountry emergencies are preventable, and even when bad things happen, sometimes the wrong care can make things worse. By learning a few basic skills, you can make the difference between a bad outcome and a good one - and maybe even save a life.
CPR is one of the main skills you have in your toolkit for Wilderness First Aid. However, traditional WFA courses do not teach CPR itself. Due to a plethora of student feedback, we are now bundling the WFA and CPR courses together.
Who is Wilderness First Aid (WFA) for?
WFA is the perfect course for the outdoor enthusiast or trip leader who wants a basic level of first aid training for short trips with family, friends, and outdoor groups. No prior first aid experience is required. Our WFA meets the American Camp Association (ACA) guidelines.
What is taught?
WFA is a 16 hour long, two day course that focuses on the basic skills of Response and Assessment, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Environmental Emergencies, Survival Skills, Soft Tissue Injuries, and Medical Emergencies. The CPR portion is taught at the end of the day on Saturday, lasts 2-3 hours, and covers adult, child, and infant CPR.
Where and when is it held?
Our WFA & CPR Bundle course is held at the Sports Basement Presidio (610 Old Mason St. San Francisco, CA).
Is there an exam?
Yes. There is an ongoing evaluation of practical skills and written assessments throughout the course.
Do I get certified?
Yes. You will receive SOLO WFA and CPR/AED certifications which are valid for two years.
Who does the certification come from?
SOLO, Stonehearth Open Learning Opportunities. SOLO courses are taught all over the United States and overseas. They are widely known and respected as both a pioneer and leader in the industry.
Breakdown of Class Time
Classroom
Traditional in-class learning with lecture, demonstrations, and Q&A. *Please note that during the COVID-19 pandemic, this course will be held 100% outside, rain or shine.
Practice
Hands-on time to practice skills such as assessing a patient, building a splint, improvising a litter, etc. Practice is usually done in pairs or small groups to encourage peer learning. *Please note that during the COVID-19 pandemic, if you are fully vaccinated and feel comfortable working with another fully vaccinated participant during the hands-on scenarios, please bring your vaccination card to the course. Props will be utilized for those who are not yet fully vaccinated or do not yet feel comfortable.
Scenarios
We use frequent, realistic (and often dramatic) fake medical emergencies to practice the feeling of being in a real wilderness emergency, how to mitigate risk factors, and get your patient(s) to safety.
Meet your Wilderness First Aid Instructor: Danielle O’Farrell
“Growing up in San Francisco, I fell in love with the outdoors first as a kid watching nature grow up through sidewalk cracks, and later, during camping trips near Yosemite. Long distance hiking reshaped my life after hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in 2017. I have gone on to hike the Continental Divide Trail as well as a solo backpacking journey of 270 miles of mostly off trail travel through the High Sierra. Other than hiking, I love to climb and simply spend time outside.
I have been teaching Wilderness First Aid since 2018 and have found it to be a perfect combination of my passion for the outdoors with my background in biology and education. I look forward to seeing you in a future class!”
