Smartwool updated the fit of their Women's Classic Thermal Merino Base Layer 1/4 Zip to improve functionality while also enhancing aesthetics. As one of the heaviest base layer tops and one of their best base layers for cold weather, this garment uses 100% responsibly sourced Merino wool, shoulder panels, and a flatlock seam construction to help minimize chafing as well as keep you comfortable and temperature regulated as you enjoy high-intensity skiing, hiking, running, and more.

My skin is very sensitive to wool but I find this top soft and comfortable to wear. It's warm and close fitting as well as lightweight. I plan to bring it on an upcoming trip to the Arctic. While I mainly plan to wear it as a base layer, it's attractive enough to wear alone.

I own several of these 1/4 zips in different colors. This time I bought the Pool Blue Joviansphere. It's so vibrant and beautiful. I also have the matching merino base layer crew neck in this style and I love it. Now I can double-down on this awesome style by wearing the 1/4 zip on top of the matching crew neck. The fabric is so comfortable to wear: soft and non-itchy. It's warm but somehow also breathable, and it doesn't hold any odor. Highly recommend!!

I took this thermal on a 3-week trip to Patagonia. I wore it almost every day: hiking, paddling, including to bed at night! It was soft, warm, and never developed a bad smell! It hasn't pilled like some wool sweaters, and I think it will last forever LOL. I LOVE IT!

This is my third thermal Metino base layer. Sometimes I wear not a wool layer underneath. I wear them hiking in winter and mostly skiing. They all keep me so comfortably warm. I don't wash them after each use, usually just air overnight. No itching, no shrinking after wash
