Assuming you are using this to transport a family on a trip or several folks to the slopes....there is no reason not to get an XXL. Once its mounted, you are all set and don't notice its extra size compared to the smaller models. It proportions well for a full size SUV.

We purchased our first Thule product and couldn't be happier with the quality, easy installation and practicality. Loads of storage room. We were able to store 3 suitcases, dog food, fishing rods, bulk water jugs and so much more to free up room in our vehicle to house our family of 3 and 3 dogs. A design feature that the company could look into is installing a rubber mechanism over the lock to product it from freezing which we experienced during a freezing rain storm.

There is a tonne of space, so we fit 3 duffle bags inside with some backpacks, small bags and nordic skis with ample room still left. The locking mechanism is nice too because the entire grey lock turns making it an easy handle with no risk of the key snapping. I haven't noticed any extra fuel consumption on a 1000km road trip.

I have been using the Thule Fordce XT XXL for 4 years now for my annual Trek to the Beaches on the Texas Gulf Coast. I carry 3 beach chairs, a beach umbrella, cushions, beach towels and other beachware and small ice chests with ease. One of the claw clamps fell apart, the claws fell out of the clamping device, during the third year, but was easily replaced. I have encountered heavy tropical rain storms on the Gulf Coast on several trips and the Thule remained stable, steady and all items in the interior remained dry. All passengers on my road trips have been impressed by the fact that they were totally unaware that the loaded Thule was sitting on top of my Jeep Grand Cherokee while driving for up to 10 hours at maximum highway speeds(75mph).
